Alien Intelligence

As humans and fraal spread across The Orion Arm of the galaxy their colonies discovered copious forms of life among the stars. In 2240 the Terran Empire developed a guide for classifying alien species by their behavior and their psychological makeup. Xenopsychologists identified six unique classes of life in their dissertation The Prototypical Alien Lifeform: A Guide on Life’s Intricacies. This guide, while amended through the years, is viewed as one of the last great contributions to the interstellar community from the Terran Empire before its demise. Below is a list of the six classes of life and the identifying criteria of each:

Class I: Non-living entities:
1. The entity is incapable of reasoning or communication in any observable manner.
2. The entity requires no exterior substances or stimuli to continue its existence.
examples – elements, minerals & stellar phenomenon

Class II: Non-intelligent living entities:
1. The entity is incapable of reasoning or communication in any observable manner.
2. The entity requires a specific class of stimulus to maintain its current condition. Denial of this stimulus causes the entity to become inert or die.
3. The entity does not or cannot retreat from harmful stimulus.
examples – fungi, lichen & simple plants

Class III: Low-order sentient entity:
1. The entity can communicate with others of its kind but does not or can not communicate with other entities.
2. The entity demonstrates collective-preservation instincts, actively relocating itself in search of enriching stimuli. Denial of this stimulus causes the entity to become inert or die.
3. The entity retreats from harmful stimuli.
examples – insects & fish
Special1: This is the lowest form of life that the psionic ability Mental Blast will work on.
Special2: Most low maintenance pets fall into this category.

Class IV: High-order sentient entity:
1. The entity can communicate with others of its kind and understands when other species attempt communication but is incapable of inter-species communication.
2. The entity demonstrates self-preservation instincts, actively relocating itself in search of enriching stimuli going so far as waiting for or developing new methods of acquiring the required stimulus. Denial of this stimuli causes the entity to become inert or die. A sense of ‘self’ is evident as the entity prioritizes its own survival over others of its own kind in collective unit.
3. The entity retreats from harmful stimuli.
examples – reptiles, most birds & most mammals
Special1: This is the lowest form of life that the psionic abilities Detect Thoughts, Domination and Mind Probe will work on.
Special2: Most recreational and service pets fall into this category. Click here for more information on pets.

Class V: Sub-sapient entity:
1. The entity can communicate with others of its kind and understands when other species attempt communication. A sub-sapient entity can convey simple needs and desires to fully sapient entities through gestures, vocal emissions or a combination of the two.
3. The entity creates tools and methods to protect itself from harmful stimuli.
4. The entity investigates non-harmful & non-beneficial stimuli in the world around it in an attempt to understand it.
examples – trained apes, trained parrots, trained crows & trained octopi
Special1: This is the lowest form of life that the psionic ability Mindlink will work on.
Special2: Interstellar law prohibits unregistered contact with alien lifeforms of this category. Immediate notification of first-contact professionals is required. Non-registered contact is punishable by 20% of a creature’s maximum life duration imprisoned.

Class VI: Sapient:
1. The entity can communicate with others of its kind and understands when other species attempt communication. A sapient entity has the potential to learn another sapient entity’s method of communication.
2. The entity demonstrates self-preservation instincts, actively relocating itself in search of enriching stimuli going so far as waiting for or developing new methods of acquiring the required stimulus. Denial of this stimuli causes the entity to become inert or die. A sense of ‘selflessness’ is evident as the entity prioritizes another entity’s survival over itself despite its own higher chance at survival.
3. The entity creates tools and methods to protect itself from harmful stimuli.
4. The entity investigates non-harmful & non-beneficial stimuli in the world around it. The entity questions completely logical conclusions it believes to be true in a desire to broaden its knowledge.
examples – humans, fraal & weren
Special1: This is the lowest form of life that the psionic ability Attraction will work on.
Special2: Interstellar law prohibits unregistered contact with alien lifeforms of this category. Immediate notification of first-contact professionals is required. Non-registered contact is punishable by life imprisonment.
